Our lightweight pyjamas have been handwoven and naturally dyed in Karachi, Pakistan from 100% cotton. The top has a V-neck collar and chest patch pocket, while the trousers have an elasticated drawstring waist and side slip pockets.

The level of geometry on the garment comes from the traditional method Ajrak (اجرڪ) - a unique form of block-printing found mostly in Sindh, Pakistan - in which prints were transferred from geometric shapes etched on the wooden blocks by pressing them hard on the fabric.

Each Pyjama set comes in a matching drawstring cotton bag.

Clara is 168cm tall and wears a size S.

CARE

Machine or hand wash gently with similar colours using a mild detergent.

Avoid drying the fabric in direct sunlight. Do not dry clean.

This fabric has been screen printed by hand, meaning each piece is unique and colours can vary. These irregularities are characteristic of this lovely print method and are not considered faults.

STORY

TECHNIQUE

Koel fabrics are woven on the handloom by skilled artisans. The gentle hand of nature colours the fabric with dyes extracted from leaves, flowers, roots and bark. Since its inception 40 years ago, Koel has continued to foster the traditional crafts, using hand-woven cloth from hand-spun thread for its products.

AJRAK

Ajrak (Sindhi: اجرڪ), also known as Ajrakh, is a unique form of blockprinting found mostly in Sindh, Pakistan and Ajrakhpur, India.

Koel's Ajrak production is done in Matiari, a city known for this generations-old craft. The word 'Matiari' is derived from two Sindhi words 'Mat' and 'yari', meaning friendship with earthen water pots.

KOEL

Koel was established in 1977 to promote the revival of hand-loom weaving and block-printing. Ahead of its time, Koel evolved a design philosophy that began to breathe new life into the traditional design repertoire. Soon, it began to use the indigenous technology of renewable natural dyes extracted from leaves, flowers, roots and bark to saturate its textiles. Koel works with the age-old wisdom of master craftsmen, linking a rich past to a vibrant present.
