Algeria: Civilisations, Culture & Desert Dunes

This journey through Algeria reveals one of North Africa’s most surprising and least-visited destinations, where ancient history, dramatic landscapes, and living traditions come together in extraordinary ways.
Algeria is a vast, welcoming, and profoundly memorable place, offering a sense of discovery that is increasingly rare in modern travel.

This journey is undertaken with a small group of curious travellers (maximum 8 people) curated by ISHKAR, and led by a local guiding team for in-depth perspectives and discussions on the region.

The total price per person for group trips starts at $5,040. Please note that bespoke trips are priced separately.

We interview all those that apply to join the trip. Once selected, participants will be required to pay a 30% non-refundable deposit to secure their place on the trip. If booking within 60 days of departure, full payment is due on confirmation. International flights not included, see below for details.

Trip Highlights

01 / The Roman Ruins of Djemila

Explore one of North Africa’s most remarkably preserved Roman cities, dramatically set in the mountains. Grand forums, basilicas, temples, and intricate mosaics bring the ancient world to life in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a reminder of Algeria’s role in the classical Mediterranean world.

02 / Exploring Tassili n’Ajjer

Journey into a surreal desert landscape of sculpted sandstone towers, labyrinthine canyons, and prehistoric rock art. Travelling by 4x4 and on foot, you’ll explore hidden gueltas, ancient rock carvings, and vast silence — sleeping beneath star-filled skies in remote desert camps.

03 / Iherir Oasis

Iherir is a UNESCO-listed oasis of palm groves, flowing water, and crystal-clear pools. Swim in natural gueltas, visit traditional stone huts, and experience rhythms of Saharan life in one of the desert’s most unexpectedly lush settings.

04 / Tuareg Traditions Djanet

Beyond the landscapes, the desert reveals its human story. Share tea during a traditional ceremony, visit local markets, and spend nights in tented camps and zeribas — experiencing the hospitality of Saharan life.

Our Destination

This journey through Algeria explores the country's layered history: from the whitewashed alleys of the UNESCO-listed Casbah to the vertiginous bridges of Constantine and the remarkably preserved Roman ruins of Djemila. Algeria’s cities feel authentic, shaped by Berber, Arab, Ottoman, and French influences, and offer a depth of culture rarely found on more familiar travel routes.

The adventure continues south into the Sahara, where the scale and beauty of the desert are breathtaking. In the Tassili n’Ajjer region near Djanet, sculpted sandstone formations, prehistoric rock art, hidden canyons, and palm-filled oases such as Iherir and the Idarane Valley create a landscape that feels both timeless and otherworldly. Travelling together we will share tea with local communities, watch the light change over endless dunes, and sleep beneath star-filled skies.

Your Guides

We are working with local guides in both the north and south, and have hand picked an experienced team of local guides who we feel are a great fit for ISHKAR. Their expertise extends beyond the practical — offering informed interpretation of the regions they work in. With a blend of practical expertise and genuine hospitality, they guide you safely through cities, ancient ruins, dunes, and oases while sharing the stories and traditions.

Our Price

The price for this once in a lifetime trip is $5,040. It will include all food, transport and single room accommodation whilst in country. You will be assisted by guides who know the region inside out, providing access to areas rarely seen by tourists.

For those wishing to stay longer, an optional extension to Lahore is possible, for an additional payment. A minimum of two travellers are required for this extension to run.

* Single supplement applied where requested.

** Where international payments are due, we request that you ensure the
full amount is received, after all bank charges have been levied as per
the price and currency stated on the invoice stated.

Group Travel

One of the best things about going on an ISHKAR trip is the group of people with whom you travel. Our trips attract informed, critically minded and adventurous people from all around the world.

Some of you will be drawn by the prospect of spending time in the remote wilderness, others will be drawn by the chance to learn about a fascinating and often misunderstood part of the world.

We get to know everyone who applies to our trips over the phone. In this way we can curate groups guaranteed to enjoy sharing this extraordinary experience together. What unites everyone is the same curious spirit and desire to get far away from the typical tourist trails.

Travel Security

We are uncompromising when it comes to the safety and security of our travellers and will not hesitate to alter plans or cancel trips due to changing security dynamics. In recent years, the security situation in Pakistan has improved considerably. We will be travelling to Hunza which is a safe region, out of the reach of any turbulence in other regions of Pakistan.
