Local women who live under harsh climate conditions take water from a nearby water pond which was built by the World Food Programme. It helps store rainwater for future use. The image of these women depict the culture of Thar desert. Most of these communities are Hindus and on both sides of the border between India and Pakistan they wear the same traditional and vibrant outfits with the white bangles. I spent a lot of time with these women while working on an assignment and asked them how these ponds had changed their lives. The desert has very scarce water resources and the ponds have greatly impacted their livelihoods in an area that gets very little rain each year. Due to the impact of climate change these communities are struggling more than ever before.

Story

the photographer

Saiyna Bashir is a Pakistani photojournalist currently based in the capital, Islamabad. After studying journalism at the Columbia College, Chicago, Bashir worked as a staff photographer for Cap Times in the U.S for two years. The Concept

In war-torn countries the vast majority of professional photographers work for news agencies. This means their work is often focused on coverage of conflict. Our project is motivated by the opportunity to give talented photographers an entirely new outlet for their work. Through this project we hope to reveal a side to war-torn countries rarely seen in the international media.
