ISHKAR and Skateistan have joined forces to create a limited capsule collection of handmade Afghan rugs — where age-old craft meets contemporary design, and artistry becomes a vehicle for impact.

30% of proceeds from the collection will be donated to Skateistan, helping provide safe spaces, skateboarding programs and education for children in at-risk communities.

The Parwana flatweave rug, meaning butterfly, is a brightly-coloured design that evokes the beauty of Afghanistan's native flora, against the vibrant curves of a modern skate ramp. Also available as a wall-hanging tapestry.

Spun from raw Ghazni wool, this rug has been finely handwoven by master weavers in the city of Mazar-e Sharif in Afghanistan.

CARE

Made in Afghanistan from 100% Ghazni wool, our rugs are hardwearing, with Afghan rugs known to last many centuries. Until then, we have a few tips on how to keep your rugs looking good as new:

• Vacuum rugs lightly
• Avoid direct and prolonged sunlight exposure
• If a stain occurs, don't panic, but do act quickly to prevent it from drying.
• Don’t use stain removal products. Simply wash with water, mild soap and a brush, then dry your rug in the sun if you can.
• For more stubborn stains, we recommend cleaning the rug professionally, with dry-cleaning always being the best option.

RETURNABLE SAMPLE

Our returnable samples must be sent back to us within 14 days of receipt. We’ll include a returns label when we send the samples out to you.

SHIPPING

We ship all over the world via DHL Express. Once we have received your order from the artisans and successfully completed our quality checks, UK shipping usually takes 5-7 business days to arrive. Overseas deliveries can take anywhere from 7-16 days. Delivery details will be provided in your confirmation email.

Flatweave rugs - Shipping costs will apply, and will be added at checkout once your destination has been entered. If you require any information ahead of placing your order, please email our team on contact@ishkar.com.

Hand-knotted rugs - Shipping is not included at checkout for our hand-knotted rugs. Our team will contact you with a shipping quote once your order has been placed. If you require a shipping estimate before placing your order, please contact us at contact@ishkar.com.

Import duties: Please note that customers outside of the UK may be required to pay import duties/local sales taxes upon delivery in the destination country; these are not included in the price of the goods you purchase and we cannot be responsible for the payment of these fees. To alleviate this additional cost, UK VAT (20%) will be deducted from your total at checkout once you enter your shipping destination. Please contact customer@ishkar.com for an estimate of any local taxes and duties payable upon delivery in the destination country or contact your local customs office for further information.

RETURNS

Any in-stock items, excluding sale items, are returnable for a full refund (excluding shipping cost), if returned within 14 days of receipt.

Items must be in perfect, unused condition.
Ship in suitably protective packaging.
Proof of purchase is required.

The Collection

Rooted in a shared connection to Afghanistan, the collaboration brings together ISHKAR’s deep relationships with local artisans and Skateistan’s award-winning work with youth through skateboarding and education.

This collection weaves together the rugged, breathtaking landscapes of Afghanistan with the manmade, geometric structures of Kabul in which Skateistan was born. The designs echo the curves and contours found across Skateistan's Afghan locations and feature symbols of movement, freedom, and resilience.

Earth tones, dust hues, and mountainous silhouettes reflect the natural beauty of the Afghan terrain. The series is a tribute to Skateistan's original skaters - young people who carved new paths in a landscape shaped by conflict, tradition, and strength. Each piece stands as a tribute to the students' fearless progression and creativity, which continues to inspire a movement of social skateboarding around the world today.

The Weavers

Situated at the heart of the ancient silk road, for millennia Afghanistan has been known for making some of the finest rugs in the world. Since 2016 ISHKAR has worked with master weavers in Afghanistan to produce luxurious rugs which marry traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.

Every step of the production process is made by hand, from the spinning and dyeing of the wool, to the trimming, binding and washing of the rug. Each piece has its own individual character and bears the distinct mark of the artisans who brought it to life.

The Wool

The carpets are hand-knotted using Ghazni wool, a variety of wool unique to Afghanistan known for its luxuriant finish as well as its unique way of absorbing colour which gives the carpets Abrash - the technical term used to describe the mottled effect given by each strand of wool's subtle variation of colour.
