Detail

OUR DESTINATION

Bosnia & Herzegovina is a relatively new country within Europe, steeped in a varied history of cultures, religions, people and politics. First inhabited by the Southern Slavic people, it was later annexed into the Ottoman empire in 1450, bringing Islam and Ottoman culture to the region. Annexed once more into the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1908, and later becoming part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1945, Bosnia & Herzegovina eventually broke away and proclaimed independence from the former socialist state in 1992.

Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia & Herzegovina. Due to its diverse religious and cultural heritage, Sarajevo is sometimes called the "Jerusalem of Europe" or "Jerusalem of the Balkans". It has unwittingly attracted international attention through the ages, and was notably the site of the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand that sparked World War I.

In October 2019 Sarajevo was designated a UNESCO Creative City and it is one of UNESCO’s eighteen ‘Cities of Film’. During the festival, the city comes alive as it buzzes with industry regulars and cinema students from around the world.

MEET THE MASTER

Kiana is a senior TED fellow and renowned visual storyteller primarily working for the New York Times as well as National Geographic. Her connection with Sarajevo was formed whilst living there in 2012, reporting on a story about segregated schooling in a divided Bosnia.

Kiana grew up in Tehran, Iran and migrated to Toronto as a teenager. Photography provided a way to bridge the challenging gap in language and culture as she adapted to her new environment. Midway through university, she packed her life in a backpack and started a nomadic search for a place she could call home. Drawing on her roots, many of Kiana’s long-term projects explore complex topics such as migration, adolescence and sexuality, often in war-ridden countries. In 2020 she was awarded the James Foley Award for Conflict Reporting.

GROUP TRAVEL

One of the best things about going on an ISHKAR trip is the group of people with whom you travel. Our trips attract informed, critically minded and adventurous people from all around the world.

Some of you will be drawn by the prospect of spending time immersed in film, others will be drawn by the chance to learn about a fascinating part of the world.

We get to know everyone who applies to our trips over the phone. In this way we can curate groups guaranteed to enjoy sharing this extraordinary experience together.  What unites everyone is the same curious spirit and desire to get far away from the typical tourist trails.

The Film Festival

The Sarajevo Film Festival was founded in 1995 during the siege of Sarajevo as part of the fight to safeguard the city’s identity and provide a symbol of hope in the face of conflict. The city is one of UNESCO’s world ‘Cities of Film’, and there is strong local engagement with the festival across its creative industries.

Twenty-six years after its birth, the Sarajevo Film Festival is the leading film festival in Southeast Europe, recognised by cinema professionals and wider audiences alike. It shines an international spotlight on the region’s films, talent and future projects.

Once the festival programme is announced, we will tailor our itinerary to travellers’ interests, working intimate conversations with festival delegates around scheduled screenings.

Your Guide

Alma Gačanin

Alma Gačanin is a visual artist from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Alma's work deals with critical issues faced by the people of Bosnia. She will be helping to guide us around her hometown. Alma says that her favourite aspect of Bosnia is the opportunity to see so much;

"You can't help the feeling that there is a huge potential here, even though everything is falling apart. Everything is so small and close, and kind of closed off, which makes us Bosnians feel like endangered species, special and vulnerable. As a matter of fact, I love everything about Bosnia, people, culture, history, nature, the illusion that there is so much time ahead of you, especially on sunny days."

ISHKAR Team Member

Your ISHKAR point of contact for the trip is Electra Simon.  If you have any queries about the trip:

How will Covid-19 affect the trip?

In order to protect both our travellers and those that our travellers come into contact with, we mandate a strict set of COVID-19 protocols which include social distancing, usage of hand sanitiser and the wearing of face coverings.   Our COVID-19 procedures are based on up to date advice from the World Health Organisation in addition to following local requirements. Along with our security information, we ensure to send out our COVID-19 procedures document to every traveller.

All travellers (regardless of vaccination status) are required to obtain a negative PCR test result within 72 hours prior to departure.  Within 24 hours prior to departure travellers (regardless of vaccination status) must also obtain proof of a negative rapid antigen test result.   Proof of both these tests must be sent to ISHKAR prior to departure, and its cost will covered by the traveller, not ISHKAR.

Should ISHKAR decide to cancel a trip as a result of COVID-19 or should a traveller be unable to take part in the trip as a result of COVID-19, you will be offered options including a full refund as per our COVID-19 Travel Policy.  Any further questions, please take a look at our COVID-19 Travel FAQs, and our generic COVID-19 Protocols, or contact a member of the team: explore@ishkar.com
