ISHKAR is hosting a print sale, bringing together award-winning photographers, artists, and photojournalists. Each have contributed images of an Afghanistan that we rarely see in the news. All proceeds from the sale of these prints will be donated to EMERGENCY Hospitals in Afghanistan; an amazing organization, providing free critical healthcare to one of the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Prints will be for sale online at special, one-off prices and available for a limited six week period: Saturday 8th August - Friday 25th September.

Prints will be dispatched after the sale closes.

"Whip in mouth, a Kyrgyz man steers his horse in a game of buzkashi, a competition akin to polo - except a headless goat carcass takes the place of the ball. Buzkashi is the Afghan national sport. The Kyrgyz call it ulak tartysh or “kid grabbing.” I took this photo during my fifth expedition to Afghanistan’s Pamir mountains, on assignment photographing the isolated nomadic Kyrgyz community for a National Geographic feature story titled 'Stranded on the Roof of the World' (2012)"

Story

The photographer

Matthieu Paley is one of the world’s leading documentary photographers. Over the last 15 years, Matthieu has been on assignment across the world with National Geographic, from the base camp of the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, to the smallest republic in the Pacific ocean.

Matthieu has published numerous photographic books, including ‘Pamir, Forgotten on the Roof of the World’, and has won a collection of awards for his work including International Photographer of the Year Award. Focusing his efforts on regions that are misrepresented or misunderstood, he is especially committed to issues relating to diminishing cultures and the environment.

THE IMPACT

Since 1999, EMERGENCY has established a network of hospitals, first aid posts and public health clinics across Afghanistan, treating over 7 million patients in the country. As COVID-19 spreads, these centres will be in critical need of support. We hope to raise enough funds to provide EMERGENCY hospitals with protective essentials like hand-sanitiser and face masks and to directly support EMERGENCY’s treatment of other vulnerable individuals.
