THE PROCESS
THE TECHNIQUE
Afghanistan is one of the few places in the world which still produces high quality handwoven carpets. Every stage in the process is done entirely by hand, from spinning and dyeing the wool, weaving the carpet, to finally washing and cutting the carpet to an exquisite finish. Taking months to produce, these carpets are a true luxury product.

HOW IT WORKS
You will develop the concept design for your carpet over a couple of sessions with our creative director. You can (a) just choose the elements you would like included (colours, core design elements, shapes etc), (b) create a very basic sketch or (c) develop a detailed powerpoint slide reflecting your design.
Once a design has been defined, you will be sent a sample of our carpet colour swatches for you to pick the colours of your choosing to perfectly match your home interior.
PRODUCTION
Your design concept will be translated into a final technical design which will be shared with ISHKAR's team of weavers in northern Afghanistan to kickstart production. The carpets are woven entirely by hand by teams of up to three women, taking them approximately 3-4 months to weave, and 1 month to quality control, finish and ship. A standard size carpet might involve more than 1 million individual knots.
MATERIAL
The carpets are hand-knotted using Ghazni wool, a variety of wool unique to Afghanistan known for its luxuriant finish as well as its unique way of absorbing colour which gives the carpets Abrash - the technical term used to describe the mottled effect given by each strand of wool's subtle variation of colour.
