"Near the frozen Chaqmaqtin lake, a herd of yak grazes below the Pamir mountains. Incredibly adaptable animals they push snow with their hooves to feed on the wintery brown grass. During my fourth expedition to Afghanistan's Pamir mountains, on assignment photographing the isolated nomadic Kyrgz community, for a National Geographic magazine feature story titled "Stranded on the Roof of the World" (February 2013). Shot in winter 2012. " - Matthieu Paley

Story

Matthieu Paley

Matthieu Paley is one of the world’s leading documentary photographers. Over the last 15 years, Matthieu has been on assignment across the world with National Geographic, from the base camp of the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, to the smallest republic in the Pacific ocean.

Matthieu has published numerous photographic books, including 'Pamir, Forgotten on the Roof of the World’, and has won a collection of awards for his work including International Photographer of the Year Award. Focusing his efforts on regions that are misrepresented or misunderstood, he is especially committed to issues relating to diminishing cultures and the environment.

the impact

All profits from the print sale will go to EMERGENCY's crucial work in Afghanistan. Donations will fund specialist training of local nurses & doctors, who will go on to treat thousands of patients in need across the country. On the 15th of August 2021, Afghanistan fell to the Taliban. One year later the world’s attention has moved on. However the situation in Afghanistan is getting worse and worse. Faced with economic sanctions, severe drought, the cumulative toll of decades of war and renewed violence, the role EMERGENCY plays in Afghanistan is more critical than ever.

“My message is urgent: Don’t shut the door on the people of Afghanistan" Martin Griffiths, the U.N.’s emergency aid coordinator.
