The Technique

Wooden lattice panels can be found in buildings throughout the old city of Kabul. Known locally as ‘Jali’, these screens are made by joining hundreds of intricate wooden joints together. Afghanistan’s craftsmen cut the pieces of wood by eye. Every cut needs to be perfect, or the whole structure risks being askew.

The Artisan

Mansour Armaghan learned the skill of jali from his father. With only a handful of expert jali makers left in Afghanistan Mansour hopes to one day pass this tradition onto his own sons.

The Impact

On top of the amount we pay the artisans, a further 5% goes towards the Turquoise Mountain Foundation.. Turquoise Mountain supports Afghan artisans by providing them with three years of technical training, as well as a full range of business support following graduation.
