These knives are made from natural, untreated wood, so they require as much love and care in the maintaining as they did in the making. Wood will naturally expand and contract with changes in temperature and moisture. The best way to protect the wood is to rub a small amount of oil into the handle every now and then. Danish oil, camellia oil or linseed oil are best, but you can use regular olive oil too if you don’t have anything else to hand.

The blades should be cleaned and dried after use. If you use the knife regularly, make sure you strop the blade on a piece of untreated leather every once in a while to keep the blades shaving sharp.

The Artisan

Jonathan Rider is a British craftsman who has lived and worked in Afghanistan for five years. Drawing inspiration from the Silk Road, Jonathan’s collection of knives for ISHKAR are inspired by a mix of different ideas and styles from the East and the West. Combining the clean lines of Scandinavian knife blades with the rugged toughness of Afghan black walnut, these knives embody adventure and discovery. Designed as functional tools for everyday use, they will last many lifetimes. They are equally at home on a picnic in the Loire or a hunting expedition in the Pamir.

The Materials

These Knives make use of the knotted and whorled off-cuts unsuitable for traditional woodworking. Every piece of wood has a different pattern, making each knife unique.

The knife blades themselves are made by the renowned Scandinavian bladesmith, Helle. With a single bevel – known as a Scandinavian grind – these knives are easy to maintain and sharpen at home or in the field.

The knife is topped by a disc of pure Lapis Lazuili, the iconic blue stone famous for adorning the funeral masks of Egyptian pharoahs.
